Username vs. Display Name: What's the Difference?

Instagram gives you two name fields, and they serve different purposes:

  • Username (handle): Your @name — used in URLs, tags, and search. Must be unique.
  • Display Name: Shows on your profile and in feeds. Can be anything, doesn't need to be unique.

How to Change Your Username

Follow these steps on the Instagram mobile app:

  • Open Instagram → tap your profile picture (bottom right)
  • Tap "Edit Profile"
  • Tap the "Username" field
  • Type your new username
  • If available, tap the checkmark to save

On desktop: Go to instagram.com → More → Settings → Accounts Center → Profiles → Username.

Important Rules & Limits

  • You can change your username twice within 14 days. After that, you must wait.
  • Your old username is held for 14 days — you can switch back.
  • After 14 days, your old username becomes available to anyone.
  • Username must be 1–30 characters: letters, numbers, periods, and underscores only.

Tips for Choosing a Great Username

Keep it short, memorable, and related to your brand or name. Avoid numbers unless they're meaningful. Check availability across platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter) for brand consistency. If your desired name is taken, try adding your location or profession (e.g., @sarah.bakes or @mike.nyc).

What Happens After You Change

Your profile URL updates immediately. Old links to your profile will break. Mentions using your old username won't link to your account. Update your bio links and notify followers if you have a significant audience.
