Understanding the 150-Character Limit
Instagram allows exactly 150 characters for your bio — roughly 25-30 words. Every character counts, including spaces, emojis, and line breaks.
What Counts Toward the Limit
- Every letter, number, and punctuation mark = 1 character
- Most emojis = 2 characters (complex emojis = 4+)
- Line breaks = 1 character each
- Spaces = 1 character each
- Your name and username are separate fields
Smart Abbreviation Techniques
- Use "&" instead of "and" (saves 2 characters)
- Drop articles: "the," "a," "an" when possible
- Use symbols: "→" for direction, "|" for separation
- Abbreviate: "IG" for Instagram, "DM" for direct message
- Use numbers: "5+" instead of "more than five"
Line Break Hacks
Write your bio in Notes app first, then paste it into Instagram. Use the period trick: type your line, add a period on a new line, then your next line.
