Display Name vs. Username: What's the Difference?
Instagram has two types of names you can change:
- Display Name: The name shown on your profile (e.g., Sarah's Photography). You can change this anytime, up to twice within 14 days.
- Username: Your @handle (e.g., @sarahphoto). This is your unique identifier and URL. You can change it, but the old one is held for 14 days.
How to Change Your Display Name
- Open Instagram and go to your profile
- Tap Edit Profile
- Tap the Name field
- Type your new display name
- Tap Done (iOS) or the checkmark (Android)
How to Change Your Username
- Go to your profile then Edit Profile
- Tap the Username field
- Type your desired username
- If available, tap Done
- If taken, Instagram will suggest alternatives
The 14-Day Rule Explained
When you change your username, Instagram holds your old username for 14 days. This means:
- You can change back within 14 days if you change your mind
- No one else can claim your old username during this period
- After 14 days, the old username is released and anyone can take it
- You can only change your username twice within a 14-day window
Tips for Choosing a Great Username
- Keep it short: Under 15 characters is ideal
- Make it memorable: Avoid random numbers (sarah_28394)
- Be consistent: Use the same handle across platforms
- Avoid special characters: Underscores and periods are fine, but too many look spammy
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Changing your username too frequently confuses followers
- Using a username that's hard to spell or remember
- Forgetting to update your bio and link-in-bio after a name change
