Instagram's 150-Character Limit Explained

Instagram gives you exactly 150 characters for your bio, not counting your name, username, or website field. That's roughly one tweet's worth of text. Every character counts, so strategic editing is essential.

Character-Saving Techniques

Use Symbols Instead of Words

  • "and" becomes & (saves 2 chars)
  • "through" becomes thru (saves 3 chars)
  • "with" becomes w/ (saves 2 chars)
  • "location" becomes a pin emoji before the city name

Replace Words with Emojis

  • "I love coffee" becomes coffee emoji + "lover"
  • "based in New York" becomes pin emoji + "NYC"
  • "photographer" becomes camera emoji
  • "travel addict" becomes airplane emoji + "addict"

Use Pipe Separators

Pipes (|) or middot save space compared to "and" or commas with spaces. Example: "writer | runner | reader" is more compact than "writer, runner, and reader."

What Doesn't Count Toward the Limit

Your name field (30 chars), username (30 chars), and website URL are separate from the 150-character bio. Use your name field for keywords too since it's searchable.

Test Before You Post

Draft your bio in a notes app first, count the characters, then paste it into Instagram. If it cuts off mid-sentence, trim aggressively. The last visible character matters, so make sure it doesn't end awkwardly.
