The Line Break Problem

Instagram captions collapse into a wall of text by default. Line breaks disappear when you paste from other apps. Learning to format captions is essential for readability.

Method 1: Native App (2026)

Instagram now supports line breaks natively in most regions:

  1. Type directly in the Instagram app
  2. Press Return/Enter for a new line
  3. Press Enter twice for paragraph breaks
  4. Do NOT add spaces at end of lines

Method 2: Notes App Trick

  1. Draft in Apple Notes or Google Keep
  2. Use period (.) or invisible character for blank lines
  3. Copy and paste into Instagram
  4. Preview before posting

Method 3: Formatting Apps

  • Spaces app: Adds invisible Unicode characters
  • Flick: Social media manager with caption formatter
  • Later: Preserves formatting when auto-posting

Caption Structure That Engages

Line 1 (Hook): Question or bold statement
Line 2-3 (Context): Expand on the hook

Body (3-5 paragraphs): Main content
Blank line
CTA + Hashtags: Call to action, then 3-5 hashtags

Common Mistakes

  • One giant paragraph (no one reads it)
  • Starting with hashtags (put them at the end)
  • Too many decorative characters (spammy)
  • Not previewing before posting
