Why Highlight Covers Matter

Instagram Highlights sit right below your bio — they are the first visual element visitors see after reading your bio text. Well-designed highlight covers create a polished, branded look that builds trust and encourages follows.

Design Principles

1. Consistent color palette

Choose 2-3 colors that match your brand. Use the same background for all covers and vary the icon, or vice versa.

2. Simple icons over complex illustrations

Highlight covers are tiny (60x60px displayed). Bold icons are recognizable; detailed illustrations become blobs.

3. Text only when necessary

Keep text to 1-2 words max. "FAQ" "Menu" "Tips" work. Anything longer is unreadable at thumbnail size.

Organization Strategies

  • By content type: Recipes, Reviews, Tutorials, Q&A
  • By topic: Skincare, Makeup, Hair, Body
  • By customer journey: About, Services, Results, Contact
  • Keep 6-8 highlights max. Archive old ones.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixed styles across covers (looks chaotic)
  • Forgetting to update when you rebrand
  • Too many highlights (scrolling fatigue)
  • Using photos instead of icons (poor scaling)
