Name vs Username: They Are Not the Same

Many Instagram users confuse their Name and Username, but they serve different purposes and have different rules. Understanding the difference is crucial for optimizing your profile.

Username (@handle)

  • Unique across all of Instagram
  • Max 30 characters
  • Only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores
  • Used in your profile URL: instagram.com/username
  • Searchable and taggable
  • Cannot contain spaces

Name (Display Name)

  • Not unique — multiple users can have the same name
  • Max 64 characters
  • Can include spaces, emojis, and special characters
  • Displayed at the top of your profile
  • Searchable (Instagram indexes name keywords)
  • Can be changed twice within 14 days

Search Implications

Instagram search considers both fields. Someone searching for fitness coach might find you if your Name field contains those words, even if your username is @john123. This is why optimizing your Name field is so important for discoverability.

Best Practices

  • Username: Keep it simple, memorable, and related to your brand
  • Name: Include your real name plus your niche or specialty
  • Example: Username: @janephoto | Name: Jane Smith | Travel Photography

Changing Your Username

Be careful when changing your username — your old handle becomes available to anyone immediately, and existing links to your profile break. If you must change it, announce it in your Stories first.
